Saint Nicholas Bishop Of Myra
St. Nicholas was Bishop of Myra in Lycia. In spite of the fact that he is one of the more popular saints in both the Greek and Latin Churches, very little is known about him historically. According to tradition, he was imprisoned during the Diocletian persecutions but was afterwards released. He was believed to be present at the 1st Ecumenical Council in Nicaea.
St. Nicholas is regarded to be the patron saint of sailors and so many of the churches dedicated to him are built on the seashore or near enough to the shore to be able to see the waters.
He is also seen as the patron saint of children and of Russia.
His memory is celebrated on December 6.
Hymn of St. Nicholas
The truth of your deeds has shown you to your flock as a canon of the faith, an example of virtue, and a teacher of abstinence; wherefore you did by humility acquire greatness, and by poverty, riches. O father and Hierarch, Nicholas, interceded with Christ our God, that our souls may be saved..
